History

In 1996 Nashville Women’s Rugby had its inaugural year as a club. Over the past 27 years this club has provided competition, support, and friendship to hundreds of players. In Tennessee women’s rugby started as a single team formed by players from all over the state. There were not enough players to field individual teams, so the women would come together in order to play matches against teams in the greater region. There are now four teams and counting in Tennessee alone.

We were named for a bar in Chattanooga who was an original patron of women’s rugby in Tennessee. Though the bar is no longer operating we continue to be the “Stone Lions” and so keep the memory of our first patron alive. Today rugby is the fastest growing sport in America with girls and women’s rugby being the fastest growing brackets. Since the club’s founding, we have strived to provide a community for all shapes, sizes, genders, races, and backgrounds.

About Us

Today we are Nashville’s only Women’s Rugby Football Club. We compete at the D2 Level as part of USA Rugby’s True South Union. We are additionally a fully inclusive club and are proud to be members of International Gay Rugby (IGR). As members of IGR, in addition to our League play as members of True South Union, we also participate in international competition through the biannual Mark Bingham Cup. We have been members of IGR since 2020 and competed in the inaugural women’s inclusive bracket for the Amanda Mark Cup.
